From what I know this is because of hardware vignette. When the light reaches the corners of the optics it is stopped by the body of the lens. You can see what I mean if you look through the lens from the front - the hole is circular but it you tilt it a little the hole is becoming with a lemon shape. This is what cuts the bokeh, there are lenses that are not having this effect because they cover more than the matrix and this effect is out of the sensor(so not visible). The fastest lenses are much more prone to this bokeh shape. That's why this canon has it. Also my focal reducing adapter is collecting more of the image circle of the lens and projecting it to the sensor.
The helios lenses are making circular bokeh because of badly corrected optics and the previously explained reasons.
