Андромеда была дочерью царя Кефея и царицы Кассиопеи. Кассиопея хвалилась ее красотой, утверждая что Андромеда прекраснее морских нимф нереид. Разгневанный Посейдон, женатый на одной из нереид, послал морское чудовище, грозящее гибелью всем жителям страны. Оракул объявил, что гнев бога утихнет лишь тогда, когда царскую дочь принесут этому чудовищу в жертву. Обнаженную Андромеду приковали к скале у моря, и она уже готовилась к страшной смерти, когда ее увидел и спас пролетавший мимо Персей.
