Отличительной чертой XVIII века во Франции, века смеха и игры, была скука. Скука царила всюду. Она возникала внизу, где приводила к частым самоубийствам, увеличивалась со ступенями положения и богатства, и полным ее воплощением, казалось, был сам король Людовик XV. Скука была единственная любовница, которой он был верен всю жизнь, скука была тот злой гений, послушный которому Людовик говорил: «После нас хоть потоп».
