Beautiful composition. An infinitesimally minute instant magnified into a wonderfully full narrative through composition, tone, natural lighting, motion freeze, background, selective focus, mise-en-scène, pastoral period-precise costumes, relaxed candid manner . . . an almost endless list. But none less important than the success with compositional subtleties, mise en place—wash pan, not too much, not too little, just right, supportive male character, just right, horse and hinter maid, just right, wash-maid’s expression, just right. Goldilocks would be sated inside the frame and out, for few things are more compelling than mysteries we satisfy ourselves. . . who or what is just beyond the frame dodging the sloshes of creek water?
