Балкарцы и карачаевцы называли Эльбрус Минги-Тау (Тысяча гор или Гора из тысячи гор), турки называли его Джин-Падишах (Властелин горных духов), персы - Эльброс (Высокая гора), кабардинцы - Ошхамахо (Гора счастья, Гора дня), абхазцы дали массиву Эльбруса название Орфи-Туб (место пребывания блаженных), народам Грузии он был известен как Ял-Буз (Грива снега).
