Sowbugs are the only entirely terrestrial crustaceans, living mainly under old stumps or dead leaves, to protect themselves from the sun. They have a rigid, segmented exoskeleton, ranging in color from yellowish-pale brown to slate-gray to blackish. Their carapace is sometimes almost transparent. It is composed of limestone, calcium phosphate and chitin.
