The rider's focus and the bike's lean angle do convey the intensity well. What was your primary goal when capturing this shot?

I was looking for a rider who rides aggressively and would take the outside line of the turn, where there was a lot of sand. I wanted to capture a dynamic scene and also show the movement of the wheels. I was looking for a rider who leans the bike as close to the ground as possible.

The aggressive lean angle and the dust cloud work well together to emphasize speed and control. Did you use any specific techniques or settings to capture the motion blur?

As for capturing motion blur, I didn’t need any filters here. The weather that day wasn’t very sunny—it was actually cloudy—and it even rained briefly after that group of riders passed by. All I needed was a basic understanding of the exposure time required to capture a motorcycle wheel in motion. I’ve been to a motocross track a dozen or so times, so I have some experience with this. The problem is that at this competition, I think only three riders were riding aggressively, while the rest were riding conservatively. It was a cross-country competition, meaning a long-distance race. The rider I was waiting for passed by once every 20 minutes. The scene didn’t always play out in a way that made it suitable for dynamic photography.

The overcast conditions actually helped with the exposure time for capturing motion blur. It's great you managed to find and capture such an intense moment despite the challenges. What kind of camera settings did you use for this shot?

I like to shoot at f/2.8 to get a beautiful depth of field, but in this case, shutter speed was the priority, so I set the aperture to f/3.5 and the shutter speed to 1/400.

The choice of f/3.5 was smart for balancing depth of field and capturing motion blur. The rider's lean angle and the dust cloud really bring out the dynamic energy of the scene.

In this shot, the rider isn’t leaning forward the way he is in my other photos, but there isn’t that cloud of dust that I really like in shots like this. In other shots, the rider is positioned so that his handlebars are practically touching the ground. Maybe someday I’ll show other shots from this motocross competition? It also depends on whether people here will like such photos?

The composition here is strong, but the lack of dust does reduce the sense of motion. Looking forward to seeing more shots from the event!
